Excavation Estimator & Project Manager
Job Summary
The Excavation Estimator & Project Manager will own the process from bid to closeout. Performing dirt and utility takeoffs, soliciting quotes and bidding public works contracts. Coordinating with field superintendents and foremen to manage crews, equipment and materials ensuring projects are delivered safely, profitably and on time.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating
- Analyze public bid packages, municipal drawings, geotechnical reports, and specs for road, water, and sewer projects.
- Perform precise quantity takeoffs for earthwork, trench bedding/backfill, pipe works, asphalt, concrete and restoration.
- Calculate accurate production rates for heavy equipment (excavators, dozers, loaders) and crew labor.
- Solicit and manage quotes from material suppliers and subcontractors.
- Assemble and submit compliant bids for local, county, and state public works agencies.
Project Management
- Manage project execution from award through final acceptance, acting as the main contact for owners, engineers and inspectors.
- Coordinate with superintendent and foreman on equipment and crews to optimize daily production.
- Oversee project controls, including tracking daily production, managing RFIs, submittals, and reviewing tracking logs.
- Documenting changes in contract scope, negotiate change orders to protect company margins.
- Prepare and submit pay applications as contractually required and submit to the appropriate entity.
- Submitting project closeout documents per contract guidelines.
- Ensure company safety standards and maintenance of traffic plans are being adhered to.
Qualifications & Requirements
- 5+ years’ experience in heavy civil construction with a proven track record of estimating and project management.
- Solid understanding of public bidding processes, prevailing wage requirements, and municipal/DOT specifications.
- Proficiency in estimating and project management software (e.g., HCSS suite, Microsoft suite)
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management or 5+ years of experience.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, communication, leadership, organization and attention to detail.
